Apprenticeship and Certification Act Unrestricted Trade NOC 7232
Description
* Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications of tools, dies, prototypes or models
* Prepare templates and sketches, and determine work processes
* Compute dimensions and tolerances and set up machine tools
* Position, secure, measure and work metal stock or castings to lay out for machining
* Set up, operate and maintain a variety of conventional and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machine tools to cut, turn, mill, plane, drill, bore, grind or otherwise shape work piece to prescribed dimensions and finish
* Verify machined parts for conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), vernier callipers, micrometers, and electronic measuring devices
* Fit and assemble or disassemble parts using hand tools
* Test completed tools, dies, jigs or fixtures for proper operation
* May program CNC machine tools

Career Opportunities
* Tool and die makers are employed primarily in large and small companies in manufacturing industries such as automobile, aircraft, metal fabrication, electrical machinery and plastics, and in tool and die, mould making and machine shops
* Tool and die maker is a Red Seal Trade
Educational/Training Requirements
* The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 12
* Completion of a 7,280 hour apprenticeship program is required
* Tool and die maker is an unrestricted trade
Potential Earnings
* Apprentices start according to individual company rates and progress according to the company's wage scales over time
* Journeyperson wages range from $15.00 to $30.00 an hour, excluding overtime
Prospects For Employment
* Employment is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2007
* Most tradespersons work full time for a single employer; in Durham Region, the metal cutting trades are tied to the car and truck manufacturing and auto parts businesses
